Welcome to Year 1
Welcome to the Year 1 webpage which will be updated throughout the year with our class curriculum and news, updates and photographs of the exciting things that we have been getting up to.
**Please note that in the event of the Year 1 bubble needing to isolate and the need for home learning to recommence, all work will be accessed from our class page and Purple Mash will resume as a means of communication between myself and the children**
Don't forget to check the James Brindley Twitter page; @JamesBrindleyPS for more updates too.
*** Please can you ensure that your child has a water bottle in school with them every day.
Juice is not permitted, only flavoured or plain water please **
This term, our Geography based topic is ‘Where do, and did the wheels on the bus go?’ which requires us to investigate our local area. We will be looking at different types of transport and points of interest in our surrounding area. In Science we will be focusing on Animals and Humans, identifying a variety of different animals and also exploring our human senses.
During the first few weeks of term, we will be using specially selected texts from the No Outsiders scheme of work to support the children in settling back into school. We will also be looking at a book called ‘The Colour Monster’ which will provide lots of opportunities for discussions on thoughts, feelings and emotions on returning to school.
We are changing the way that we set our homework and as of this term, the children will be set a Pick and Mix style homework based on their current topic. All of the children will be required to complete the activities on their Pick and Mix at home (ideally 1 per week) and share them with me via Purple Mash so I can see all of their wonderful work. Homework will no longer come to and from school each week and no homework should be sent in to school. You will find the Autumn Pick and Mix Homework below.
Spellings will be sent home on a Friday and tested the following Friday. Access to the Spelling Shed has been put in the front of your child's reading record. You can use the games on there to practise each week's spellings.
Please ensure that your child is accessing spelling shed to practise their spellings.
Please can you check that you can log into spelling shed using the logins provided in the front of your child's reading planner. Children will be set spellings every week and spellings are dependent on their phonics phase.
Children will play the game to practice the spelling I have set for that week and then we will do a written test every Friday. The results will be communicated via the reading planner so please ensure that your chid has this with them in school every day. Please also encourage your child to access spelling shed frequently throughout the week.
If your child struggles to write the words, I am able to use other resources to deliver the spelling test for them.
Any questions please let me know.
Lessons will be on Tuesday and Friday. If your child wears earrings they will need to be removed by yourself or them prior to the sessions. Children are unable to participate when wearing earrings or any other kind of jewellery. All children will also need an outdoor kit (plain joggers/jumper and trainers) PE kits will be sent home every Friday to be washed over the weekend and returned the following Monday.
Please ensure that ALL of your child's clothing/shoes are clearly labelled. As the weather will be getting wetter, please can you send your child with a pair of wellies to remain at school so that we can access our outdoor area, even on muddy days.
Reading books need to be in school every day. Your child will read of specific days each week both individually and as part of Guided Reading sessions. Please ensure that your child reads at least 4 times at home each week and that this is recorded in their planner. Reading books and planners will be sent out Monday 14th September.
In the documents posted below you will find Year 1 Knowledge Organisers for English and Maths. These documents set out and explain all of the key vocabulary that will be covered during your child's time in Year 1, we hope that you find them useful.
Creative fund will be continuing in Year 1 and Mrs Simmons has passed over any remaining funds to myself which have been used to ensure that there are lots of creative opportunities available for your children in the first few weeks as they settle into Year 1.
In order to provide your children with the variety of snack, baking opportunities and creative consumables we request a contribution of £10 per term or £30 for the full year. They will enjoy baking some tasty treats and as the weather grows colder we will have a nice cup of warm hot chocolate. We have many activities planned this term that include, seasonal crafts, making and decorating cakes, making monster slime, salt dough constructions and lots more. Please ensure your money is in an envelope clearly labelled with your child’s name and class. Thank you
We are also looking to improve our outdoor area to make it exciting and inviting for our wonderful children. We need your help!
We would be very grateful for anything you could donate to us and it would be highly beneficial for our children to explore and investigate with such open ended resources!

Please also take the time to look through the Year 1 end of year expectations below.
