P.E. and School Sport at James Brindley Community Primary School

At James Brindley Community Primary School we greatly value the role that Physical Education plays within our curriculum. Our sporting ethos in underpinned by ‘The Spirit of The Games Sporting Values’ which we believe supports our pupils in striving to do their best and achieving sporting success when experiencing both school sport and competitions. We develop the fundamentals of physical literacy through our bespoke curriculum and have a broad and inclusive competition programme which involves both intra and inter school competition, and promotes health and wellbeing through a commitment to physical activity.

All of our pupils receive 2 hours of high quality PE teaching per week. An hour of this teaching is led by their class teacher and the second hour is taught by an external Sports Coach from EdStart. An overview of how we teach our carefully planned and structured PE Curriculum can be found on our ‘Whole School Overview’ document below. Alongside this you will find documents for EYFS, KS1 and KS2 which clearly set out how our bespoke P.E. provision links to the National Curriculum. To ensure curriculum coverage and clear progression our Progression in Skills documents identify key knowledge and skills which are taught and built upon from year to year. These documents provide our teachers with a clear and concise overview which enables them to teach high quality, fun and engaging P.E. lessons which up skill and develop our pupils.

Assessment

We set personal challenges for all of our pupils by using the Amaven programme at regular intervals throughout the academic year. The programme sets skills based challenges for the children and assesess and measures their progress by utilising their baseline data which is set in the Autumn Term. The scheme sets personal and meaningful targets for the children and enables them to have ownership over their own progress and development as they strive to exceed and achieve their personal goals.

Sports Premium

We are committed to the careful planning and spending of our Sport Premium funding to ensure high quality, sustainable impact. Please see our Sport Premium Spending Plan and Impact of Sport Premium Spending Document to see how we have prioritised our spending over recent years and the positive impact that this has had on PE and school sport at James Brindley Community Primary School.

Extra-Curricular

Within our sporting provision at James Brindley we offer a structured and well planned out extra-curricular calendar which enables the opportunity for all children to be involved in a range of sports and provides meaningful sporting experiences for all regardless of their age or ability. Our keen and committed staff play a vital role in being strong sporting role models to our pupils within this calendar of school sport as they actively lead, manage and engage themselves in our provision.  We strongly believe that competitive sport develops a range of life skills which can support young people as they progress through school and into adult life. Teamwork, resilience and leadership skills along with teaching our pupils how to handle success and disappointment are skills and qualities which we aim to teach our children through our PE and school sport provision.

We are members of the Salford Schools Sports Partnership and actively participate in their competition calendar. We are also fortunate enough to be part of a cluster of schools that value and encourage sport and competition as we readily compete in our local athletics, cross country, swimming, rounders, football and netball leagues. Alongside this we also train for and engage in one off events such as hockey, dodgeball, rugby, cricket, wrestling, golf and tennis. Over recent years we have been incredibly successful in sporting competitions and our gymnastics squad have not only been crowned Salford Champions but went on to become Greater Manchester Champions in 2019 and 2022. An outstanding achievement!

We are always looking to extend our sporting provision and more recently have undertaken staff coaching in ultimate frisby and NFL and we also seek to offer our children the opportunity to experience enrichment activities such as Quidditch and fencing. Over recent years we have developed strong sporting links within the community by having taster sessions/coaches working in our school and as a follow up we actively encourage children to access these clubs out of school. Eccles and Boardman Lacrosse Club, Sharples Wrestling Club, Manchester United Foundation, Salford Reds, Walkden Cricket Club and Charlestown Netball Club are examples of some of these. To extend our provision of Outdoor Adventurous Activities we also offer residential opportunities to our Year 3 and Year 5 children to enable them to experience a wider variety of activities than we could offer in our school setting.

Sports Council

Our Sports Council play a key role in being the voice of our pupils in making sporting related decisions and planning sports events. Over recent years they have been highly successful in organising fundraising events to raise money for charities such as Sport Relief and Cancer Research as well as raising money for additional sports equipment to be used at playtimes. They have a key role in planning and leading our annual Inter House events such as Sports Week and Cross Country and along with our team of Playground Leaders actively enforce our Sporting Values within their classes and the wider school.

Having obtained our Gold School Games Mark for 5 consecutive years we successfully achieved our Platinum Award in 2019 and 2022 and utilised the hard work of our Sports Council as the case study which formed the basis of our application. We were incredibly proud to be awarded the Platinum Award and appreciate the recognition it gives of our commitment to PE and school sport.

Wellbeing Through Sport

We are committed to developing positive mental and physical health and in 2019 trialled a ‘Wellbeing Through Sport’ programme designed by Team Mental Health along with Edstart sports coaches. The success of this trial led us to choose to incorporate this programme into our provision and utilise the programme as part of our bespoke curriculum for our Year 5 children. This sessions runs in addition to the 2 hours curriculum PE that these children already receive.

The overarching aim of our PE provision at James Brindley Community Primary School is to ensure that all pupils leave our school physically literate, and with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical sport and activity. We hope that you enjoy looking through our photos and videos to give you a taste of what PE at JB is all about.
