Deaf Awareness Week
Date: 8th May 2026 @ 6:39pm
We have really enjoyed learning more about Deaf Awareness, this week.
We joined a member of the Salford Deaf support team on a live lesson. During the lesson we learnt some everyday signs such as "Good Morning", "How are you?" and "What is your name?" We then learnt the letters of the alphabet so that we could spell our names. The children were fantastic and have been practising and signing to each other all week!
On Thursday we looked at how to communicate effectively with a person with hearing loss, ensuring our mouths are clear and we have the person's attention before we speak.
On Friday, we found out that some well known celebrities have hearing loss - Fury from The Gladiators, George Pig and footballer Jamie Clarke. We then watched the powerful performance starring Rose Ayling-Ellis as she danced in silence on Strictly Come Dancing.
We are definitely more aware, in Year 2 and all of the children showed respect throughout the week and asked some very poignant questions.
