Keeping Healthy!

This term in Reception our topic has been all about keeping healthy in our minds, bodies and environments.

We focused on understanding the importance of keeping all three areas healthy and happy. We explored different ways that we can mantain health in these areas.

In one of our lessons, we had lots of fun learning all about germs. Reception conducted an experiment where we learnt about how far germs spread. One child dipped their hand in water and then green glitter (our germs) they then went down the line of reception children shaking each of their hands and kept going until no more glitter spread. Then one child went around the classroom touching high touch points, like chairs, door handles and toys. We noticed how far the germs spread and had conversations about how we can prevent this by washing our hands, covering our mouths when sneezing/coughing and keeping our classroom clean. Reception even washed 'dishes' in the water tray to clean the germs off them too.

We then learnt all about a balanced diet with the eat well plate diagram. We talked all about carbs, protein, dairy and the different types of foods. To explore healthy foods we had a fruit tasting session where Reception tried a range of fruits, many of them had never tried certain ones before and were really confident in trying them and many of them said they would eat them again which was lovely too see. Reception also took part in some mini exercise activities like obstacle course outside and running races where we discussed how it raised our heart rate and how that can keep us healthy.

To finish our topic, we had a session learning about healthy minds. We explored and spoke about different emotions: linking it to the film Inside out. Reception spoke about how different emotions make us feel and what we can do to help oursleves when we feel like that. They also tried some mindfulness breathing for a calming strategy.

Overall, they engaged so beautifully with this topic and had lots of fun!
