Summer Term

Our Newsletter for the Summer term can be found at the top of this page.

During the Summer Term, our topic is History based. This term we are focusing on Neil Armstrong and his trip to the moon in 1969. We will be learning about all his life and achievements and how the world was changed by the first man to land on the moon.  In Science, we will be learning all about seasonal changes and also plants. We will kick off our plant learning with a visit to RHS Bridgewater Worsley on Wednesday 24th April.  More information regarding our work for this half term can be found in our class newsletter and an overview of our Year 1 curriculum can be found in the 'Curriculum on a Page' document.

**Important Information**

Homework

We are continuing with the Pick and Mix style of homework and all of the children will be required to complete the activities on their Pick and Mix at home and share them with me via Purple Mash or bring it into school so I can see all of their wonderful work. You will find the Spring Pick and Mix Homework at the top of this page.

We will be holding a homework celebration day on Thursday 18th July so please ensure that you send your child's work to school or upload it on Purple Mash so that we can share it on this day. You will receive an email copy and a paper copy of the homework for the Spring term and I will be checking in with the children weekly to see what homework has been completed. The expectation is that one activity is completed each week and can be completed in any order.

Spellings

Spellings will be sent home Friday 19th April for your children and reflect the sounds they have been learning in their phonics that week. Please encourage your child to practise their spellings using the Look, Cover, Write, Check method. Your child will complete a weekly spelling test on a Friday and will bring home a spelling book with their results in it. This needs to be returned to school every week before the following Friday.  The spelling sheets that your child brings home DO NOT need to be sent back to school.

P.E.

P.E. lessons will be on a Tuesday and Wednesday. Please ensure that your child has a full, named PE kit in school including pumps. If your child wears earrings, they will need to be removed by yourself or them before the sessions. Children are unable to participate when wearing earrings or any other kind of jewellery. PE kits will be sent home at the end of every half term to be washed and returned ready for PE when we return to school the following term. Trainers are not permitted for indoor PE and children will need to wear pumps.

Clothing

Please ensure that ALL of your child's clothing/shoes are clearly labelled including their coats. This makes returning any lost items, a lot easier.

Reading Books

Reading books and planners need to be in school every day. Your child will read on specific days each week both individually and as part of Guided Reading sessions. Please ensure that your child reads at least 4 times at home each week and that this is recorded in their planner with any comments you feel are relevant to your child’s reading.

Library Books

Library books can be changed every Friday as long as the book and bag are returned to school. Books are to be kept for a maximum of two weeks only.

Useful Documents

In the documents posted at the top of this page, you will find Year 1 Knowledge Organisers.  These documents set out and explain all of the key vocabulary that will be covered during your child's time in Year 1, we hope that you find them useful.

Please also take the time to look through the Year 1 end-of-year expectations below.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to speak to us.

We look forward to a successful year with your child.
