At James Brindley, we value the sense of self and perspective that history gives us. We give children opportunities to research their learning, questioning the merits and value of information from a variety of sources.
History is our lead subject throughout the Summer Term and we all focus on a broader History study within each year group. During this term, children will frequently do more than 2 hours of History per week. We work hard to teach our children of the facts from certain periods of History and aim to cross this over with as much of the other curriculum as possible. Most importantly of all, we value the importance of taking part in re-creating some of the awe and wonder associated with these significant areas of our past and, of course, some significant historical figures. We place importance on our children being able to recognise, understand and explain how things link within each area of History that is studied, in particular British History which is taught chronologically across the school.
We are delighted to have been donated a range of historical newspapers that document significant events in world history. The newspapers cover a range of events including World War I, World War II, The Coronation of Queen Elizabeth, the Moon Landings and the sinking of the Titanic. The newspapers will give children an insight into how events were reported at the time and allow them to read historical eye witness accounts.

Year 4H and Year 4S
Year 4H and Y4S are studying the Ancient Egyptians as their main History topic and they are extremely excited about their learning journey throughout the Summer Term. As we progress, various photographs and a couple of videos will showcase this learning and ultimately this will culminate in a whole school History Week (week beginning 13th June, 2016). Both classes are really looking forward to their Ancient Egyptian Day that particular week, where they will look in more detail at Ancient Egyptian Fashion. Watch this space...
Year 5 kickstarted their studies of Anglo-Saxon and Viking Britain with a visit from a real-life Viking!
Our visitor discussed all aspects of family life and gave outstanding demonstrations on how the Vikings made fire and how they approached a battle. The children had a fantastic time and are now itching to immerse themselves in further learning. You can watch three short videos and few photos of our visitor in action, below.
Years 5 and 6 were invited to take part in the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme at Heaton Park on Friday 01 July 2016. Children split into 4 groups and were guided around a variety of workshops that featured presentations, tram rides, video reels, re-enactments and live musical and drama performances.
The children had a great time and only wished they could have stayed longer to enjoy all of the exhibitions.
