Race 3- Saturday 08 October 2016

The final race of the Salford METS XC Series 2016 took place in glorious sunshine today at Cleavley Track. With quite a few debutants today, our number of actively competing runners this season hit a massive 77! A large and enthusiastic thank you is extended to each and everyone of our athletes and their families for supporting their school. We are very grateful. A special mention is also reserved for school coach, Mrs Seddon for her dedication to preparing children for races.

In the girls race, we'd everything to play for with the team lining up to defend a narrow lead. Over 40 girls toed the start line for James Brindley and the pace was quick from the off. At the front of the field, Millie Bayman led from gun to tape with an assured performance that resulted in her being crowned Year 6 Girls Champion 2016. Behind her, Anjali Mistry and Jasmine Wright packed well inside the top 10 finishing 3rd and 7th respectively. Jasmine's run was all the more commendable after a nasty tumble in the woods that was caught on camera. Izabela Bamber, in her maiden outing of the year, ran a very well paced race to come flying through for a top 10 finish. Indeed, we'd nine runners inside the top 20 with very commendable runs for young Asha Mistry, Sophia Roiditis and Maisie Jeffries. This strong finish ensured that our girls team were crowned Series Champions 2016. Among our very large contingent of girls, Khizzie Crompton, Lily O'Brien, Fern Rothwell and Emily Johnson are showing that they are running themselves into good form ahead of the opening round of the Salford Schools Cross Country Championships next month.

The team spirit among our youngest girls has been one of the most enjoyable aspects of the season, so far- they've really embraced the challenge of competing against much older girls. It will undoubtedly stand them in great shape for the upcoming Salford Schools Championships where they will only have to compete against girls up to Year 4. The racing will also prove to be excellent preparation for our annual School Cross Country Championships in January. They've all been absolutely fantastic and are a great credit to their school.

In the boys race, our team produced their strongest finish yet with four runners inside the top 15 places. Matthew Greenwood led the team home with an excellent 9th place finish. He was very ably supported by the fantastic Harry Bayman, Jake Royle and Joseph Stringer in 10th, 14th and 15th places respectively. Slightly further back, our boys packed well with Joel Purvis and Josh Greenwood engaged in a private battle to ensure both boys finished in the top 30. It's been great to see a number of new faces competing among the boys this season. Well done to Blake Farrow, Louie Pearson, Ren Smith and Andrew Flatt. Alongside our many seasoned professionals, you've really strengthened our team and we look forward to seeing how you fare in the Salford Schools.
