2015-16 Salford Tag Rugby Championships

'Interesting' weather greeted our rugby team this afternoon at the AJ Bell Stadium. Breezy throughout, the children were treated to beautiful rainbows and an encore of icy cold drizzle to make playing (and filming!) conditions very challenging. We were thrilled, however, to have a number of our parents who braved the wintry weather conditions alongside us to support our team.

It took our team a little while to get going in the first match. After a slow start, we fought back to dominate large parts of our game against St.Mark's but had to settle for a 1-1 draw. By the time our second game kicked off against Westwood Park, we finally looked like we'd warmed up (harder than it sounds on a day like today!) and, after a sustained period of pressure, made the deserved breakthrough to win the match 1-0. Our final group game was against the impressive group leaders Beech Street. From 2-1 down we fought hard to carve out an impressive 3-2 victory to ensure that we ended as group winners.

Upon the completion of the group games, we were very glad to retreat to the warmth of the indoor reception hall of the AJ Bell Stadium, to warm up and wait for the announcement of the quarter finals. Spirits were high in the camp and we were somewhat grateful and relieved that our hands slowly gained their natural colour again. Our thanks to Mr and Mrs Markham who braved the cold to look after all our belongings.

Our quarter final match against Irlam Endowed was just about completed before the weather led to the cancellation of the remaining matches. In a tightly contested game, we were somewhat unfortunate to lose out 2-1, having a late try disallowed.

Back in the safety and warmth of the AJ Bell Stadium, I was very proud of how our children conducted themselves waiting to be collected for the trip home. As ever, they were a real credit to our school.
My thanks to all the parents for your support and for helping to ensure we were able to attend the event.
